September import data reveals strong US urea purchases

Houston, 12 November (Argus) — The US imported 961,720 st (872,467 t) of urea in September, a nearly 52pc increase over August and a 31pc boost over September 2011.

Imports for the fertilizer year beginning July 2012 through September were up nearly 40pc compared with July-September 2011 imports.

That demand growth stems from several factors, including imports that were already behind normal levels last year as the US entered the spring planting season. Most importers also want to get spring 2013 tonnage in place early in an effort to avoid the huge price run-up seen during the spring of 2012, which was caused by insufficient inventories to meet prompt spring demand.

In addition, anecdotal evidence suggests the spring 2012 season ended in May or June with the distribution system far emptier than usual. Numerous suppliers said there were far fewer carry over tons this year compared with last, while there were also more requirements than usual for the fall.

Besides the 126,059 st of Canadian production imported in September, the bulk of imports were from the Mideast Gulf, which accounted for 371,725 st of imports in September.
