PCS recalls Lanigan workers to keep up with demand

PotashCorp (PCS) will reinstate 47 permanent employees who were laid off in December at its Lanigan, Saskatchewan, mine because of tightness in the granular muriate of potash (MOP) market.

PCS had layoffs of 440 workers at its Saskatchewan potash mines in December as it cut back operations because of declining potash prices and weak market conditions. Just over 200 of the affected employees worked at Lanigan, PCS said.

The reinstatement comes as PCS tries to keep up with demand for granular MOP, which is in tight global supply following a strong spring application season in North America. Lanigan has been operating at reduced rates (1.7mn tonnes/yr vs. nameplate capacity of 3.8mn t/yr) since December with only one of two mills in service. The facility is still operating just one mill.

The Lanigan worker recall follows a similar move PCS made on 16 June when it rescinded 50 layoff notices at its Penobsquis mine in New Brunswick. PCS temporarily extended operations at Penobsquis, which was scheduled to be taken offline in the second quarter, to help alleviate tightness in the granular MOP market.

Domestic potash prices have rebounded since PCS implemented its operational changes last December. When PCS announced the layoffs on 3 December, the midpoint granular MOP New Orleans barge price was $334/st fob Nola. Prices fell to a low of $308/st fob Nola on 30 January but have since climbed as high as $370/st fob Nola as of 26 June. The current midpoint price is $32.50/st lower than the year-ago midpoint price.
