Chinese state-controlled oil firm CNOOC has started production at its Panyu 10 fields in the South China Sea.

The fields, located in the Pearl river mouth basin, are currently yielding 9,000 b/d of oil and are scheduled to reach their output capacity of about 13,000 b/d in 2015, CNOOC said today. The project includes the Panyu 10-2, 10-5 and 10-8 fields, which are in water depths of around 100m (328ft).

CNOOC plans nine producing wells at the fields, including four that are currently on stream. The project also includes a wellhead platform but it shares some infrastructure with the nearby Panyu 4-2 oil field.

Panyu 10 is among seven to 10 developments where CNOOC plans to start production this year. The company is 100pc owner and operator of the project.

Other start-ups this year include the Kenli 3-2 oil fields in shallow waters of the Bohai Sea and the $6.5bn Liwan 3-1 natural gas development with Canadian integrated oil firm Husky Energy. Liwan 3-1 is China's first deepwater gas field. CNOOC yesterday announced the start of production at its Lishui 36-1 gas field in the East China Sea.

CNOOC's first-quarter output rose almost 16pc from a year earlier to 1.2mn b/d of oil equivalent.
