KIOCL plans iron ore pellet plant

  • Market: Metals
  • 01/09/14

Indian producer KIOCL aims to set up a 2mn t/year pelletisation plant to supply fellow state-controlled Steel Authority of India's (Sail) Bokaro steel plant in east India.

KIOCL has issued tenders seeking consultants to develop the project, which would be built at the Bokaro steel plant in Jharkhand state.

KIOCL already has 3.5mn t/yr pellet production capacity in south India, for which it buys iron ore from state-controlled mining and trading firm NMDC.

Indian steelmakers are adding to their pellet production capacity as shortages in the country force them to use a larger portion of low-grade iron ore fines as furnace burden. They previously operated their plants with a larger portion of lump and high-grade fines.

The Bokaro pellet plant will largely be a captive plant for Sail, KIOCL said, with iron ore to come from Sail's mines in Orissa state. An iron ore beneficiation plant in Orissa is likely to be set up for converting the mined fines into pellet feed, which would then be transported by rail to Bokaro for pelletisation.
