US HRC: Prices flat as market looks for bottom

Domestic hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices stayed flat this week as many reported a firming of the bottom range of pricing.

The domestic US HRC assessment was flat at $450/st. Lead times were also flat at 3-4 weeks.

Demand remained weak with many service centers continuing to stay away from buying large amounts of tons to restock their inventories. Buyers say that business still remains at least 20pc off.

Some market participants expect electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmakers to push for a price increase in the next couple of weeks, as steelmakers get closer to contract season with prices at a yearly low.

Ferrous scrap prices fell in the August trade by $15/gross ton (gt) for Midwest delivery to $265/gt. Chicago busheling prices fell by $10/gt to $275/gt.

Ferrous shredded prices were up $5-10/gt, depending on the region, buoyed by export demand.

The spread between #1 busheling scrap delivered US Midwest mills and HRC selling prices expanded to $213.39/st, up by 6.7pc compared to the prior week. Year-over-year, the spread is 35pc lower than the $328.14/st recorded a year ago.

The domestic US cold-rolled coil (CRC) assessment was flat at $640/st, while the hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) coil assessment increased by $10/st to $640/st. Lead times for both products were flat at 5-7 weeks.

HRC import prices into Houston were flat at $460/st ddp, with many saying imports are not possible with domestic prices so low and global prices so high. The HRC fob Tianjin, China price rose to $447.24/st today.

Futures prices in the CME HRC futures market mostly fell in the last week. September futures prices rose fell by $14/st compared to the prior week to $502/st, while October HRC futures fell by $4/st to $524/st. November futures were flat at $528/st, while December prices slipped by $2/st to $530/st. January HRC futures were flat at $539/st, while February prices were down by $1/st to $540/st.
