  • Market: Natural gas
  • 09/02/21

Malaysia's state-owned energy firm Petronas and Japanese utility Jera have signed an initial agreement to establish a global bunkering supply network that will expand the use of LNG as a cleaner marine fuel, in line with the International Maritime Organization's regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.

The agreement builds on the companies' shared goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions, which they both aim to reach 2050. Petronas and Jera said they will also collaborate on other low-carbon energy initiatives covering ammonia and hydrogen.

The firms gave no further details on the joint LNG bunkering plans, except to say that they will leverage on each other's experience in LNG bunkering. Petronas completed its maiden LNG bunkering operation at Pasir Gudang in Malaysia's Johor state in November, while Jera carried out its first LNG bunkering operation in Japan a month earlier.
