Japan, Belgium firms eye hydrogen demand in Kyushu

Trading house Itochu is joining forces with Japanese coke producer Nippon Coke & Engineering and Belgium shipping firm Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB) to examine the possibility of developing a local hydrogen production and supply chain in northern Kyushu areas as part of efforts to realise a decarbonised society.

The project is targeted to utilise byproduct hydrogen from Nippon Coke's coke producing operations and CMB's hydrogen-powered ship engine technology, combined with Itochu's long-established business ties with steel mills and utilities, future potential users of hydrogen. The partners are planning to determine potential hydrogen demand in the northern Kyushu area, one of the country's major manufacturing areas, and launch a hydrogen supply chain sometime during the April 2023-March 2024 fiscal year. The project is subject to regulatory approvals.

Nippon Coke is operating its 2.1mn t/yr coke production plant at Kitakyushu, Fukuoka prefecture in the northern part of Kyushu island. It is expected to offer stable supply of hydrogen and meet local demand in the northern Kyushu area via a separation of hydrogen from byproduct gases from its coke production process.

Itochu said the company is aiming to develop hydrogen supply chain projects in other Japanese areas upon completion of the northern Kyushu project. It is also seeking to participate in hydrogen production projects overseas.

Itochu is jointly studying the feasibility of a Japan-Russia project to produce and export blue ammonia from Russia to Japan, while also participating in projects to develop supply infrastructure in Japan and Singapore to use ammonia as a marine fuel.

CMB plans to launch the 19 gross-tonne passenger ferry HydroBingo, which is equipped with a dual fuel hydrogen-diesel combustion engine, in Japan in April this year. The new ferry will be operating in Seto inland sea stretching between the main Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku islands.

The Belgium firm has co-operated with Japanese shipbuilder Tsuneishi Facilities & Craft in development and construction of the HydroBingo, Japan's first hydrogen-fuelled passenger ferry. The ferry will have a capacity to carry 80 passengers and will be refuelled by a trailer via roll-on/roll-off hydrogen storage.

Japan plans to expand hydrogen use under its roadmap towards a 2050 decarbonisation goal. Potential demand for hydrogen is projected to hit 3mn t/yr in 2030 before rising to 20mn t/yr in 2050. More Japanese firms are seeking hydrogen business opportunities in Japan and overseas in the wake of a potential demand growth for the clean energy.

A group of Japanese firms has recently studied the potential hydrogen demand in central Japan's Chubu region, which is projected at 110,000 t/yr in 2030 for use in power generation, oil and petrochemical operations, as well as for fuelling fuel cell (FC) vehicles and in-house FC generators.

London, 26 April (Argus) — Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have adopted Net-Zero Industry Act, which plans to allocate funds towards the production of net-zero technologies. The act provides a pathway to scale up development and production of technologies that are critical towards meeting the EU's recommendation of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. This would include solar panels, electrolysers and fuel cells, batteries, heat pumps, onshore and offshore wind turbines, grid technologies, sustainable biomethane, as well as carbon capture and storage (CCS). The act is designed to help simplify the regulatory framework for the manufacture of these technologies in order to incentivise European production and supply. It also sets a target of 40pc production within the EU for its annual "deployment needs" of these technologies by 2030. Time limits will be instated on permit grants for manufacturing projects, at 12 months if the manufacturing capacity is under 1 GW/yr and 18 months for those above that. It will introduce time limits of nine months for "net-zero strategic projects" of less than 1 GW/yr and 12 months for those above. This is further complemented by the introduction of net-zero strategic projects for CO2 storage, to help support the development of CCS technology. The act was met with positive reactions from the European Community Shipowners' Association (ECSA), which said the bill will set the benchmark for member states to match 40pc of the deployment needs for clean fuels for shipping with production capacity. ECSA said the Net-Zero Industry Act will be instrumental in supporting the shipping industry to meet targets set under FuelEU Maritime regulations , which are set to come into effect next year. New technologies aim to boost SAF production

London, 26 April (Argus) — A likely rise in global demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), underpinned by mandates for its use, is encouraging development of new production pathways. While hydrotreated esters and fatty acids synthesised paraffinic kerosine (HEFA-SPK) remains the most common type of SAF available today, much more production will be needed. The International Air Transport Association (Iata) estimated SAF output at around 500,000t in 2023, and expects this to rise to 1.5mn t this year, but that only meets around 0.5pc of global jet fuel demand. An EU-wide SAF mandate will come into effect in 2025 that will set a minimum target of 2pc, with a sub-target for synthetic SAF starting from 2030. This week the UK published its domestic SAF mandate , also targeting a 2pc SAF share in 2025 and introducing a power-to-liquid (PtL) obligation from 2028. New pathways involve different technology to unlock use of a wider feedstock base. US engineering company Honeywell said this week its hydrocracking technology, Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Unicracking, can be used to produce SAF from biomass such as crop residue or wood and food waste. Renewable fuels producer DG Fuels will use the technology for its SAF facility in Louisiana, US. The plant will be able to produce 13,000 b/d of SAF starting from 2028, Honeywell said. The company said its SAF technologies — which include ethanol-to-jet , which converts cellulosic ethanol into SAF — have been adopted at more than 50 sites worldwide including Brazil and China. Honeywell is part of the Google and Boeing-backed United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund , which is aimed at scaling up SAF production. German alternative fuels company Ineratec said this week it will use South African integrated energy firm Sasol's FT catalysts for SAF production. The catalysts will be used in Ineratec's plants, including a PtL facility it is building in Frankfurt, Germany. The plant will be able to produce e-fuels from green hydrogen and CO2, with a capacity of 2,500 t/yr of e-fuels beginning in 2024. The e-fuels will then be processed into synthetic SAF. Earlier this month , ethanol-to-jet producer LanzaJet said it has received funding from technology giant Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund, "to continue building its capability and capacity to deploy its sustainable fuels process technology globally". The producer recently signed a licence and engineering agreement with sustainable fuels company Jet Zero Australia to progress development of an SAF plant in north Queensland, Australia. The plant will have capacity of 102mn l/yr of SAF. Polish oil firm Orlen formed a partnership with Japanese electrical engineering company Yakogawa to develop SAF technology . They aim to develop a technological process to synthesise CO2 and hydrogen to form PtL SAF. The SAF will be produced from renewable hydrogen as defined by the recast EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and bio-CO2 from biomass boilers, Orlen told Argus . Japan’s JBIC to finance Chilean copper mine development

Osaka, 26 April (Argus) — Japan is enhancing its financial support for the development of copper mines in Chile, as part of efforts to increase its self-efficiency of base metals. State-owned Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) on 25 April signed a $248mn loan agreement with Chile-based joint-venture Compania Minera Arqueros (CMAQ) to finance development of its Arqueros copper project in Chile. CMAQ is 80pc owned by Japanese copper producer Nittetsu Mining and 20pc by Chilean firm Fondo de Inversion Privado Talcuna. The load will be co-financed by other Japanese private-sector financial firms, including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, Mizuho Bank and MUFG Bank. The total co-funding will be $355mn. CMAQ plans to use the funding to develop Arqueros, located 35km northeast of La Serena. The mine is expected to produce 1.8mn t/yr of crude ore and 55,000 t/yr of copper concentrates for 15 years. The company aims to start operations in 2026. Nittetsu is to secure all the output from the project. The latest deal follows last month's loan agreement by JBIC and other financial institutes to provide $2.5bn to develop the Centinela copper mine in Chile . Japan relies on all its copper concentrates demand from imports, which has prompted the government to secure long-term and stable supplies of copper resources. The country's strategic energy plan has a target to achieve at least an 80pc self-sufficiency for base metals, including copper, by 2030. Japan’s Mol starts operating LPG-fuelled VLGC

Tokyo, 26 April (Argus) — Japanese shipping firm Mitsui OSK Line's (Mol) Singapore-based subsidiary Aramo Shipping started operating today a new LPG-fuelled LPG and ammonia carrier for domestic importer Gyxis. The 87,119m³ very large gas carrier (VLGC) Aquamarine Progress 2 was built by Japanese shipbuilder Namura Shipbuilding at Namura's Imari shipyard in south Japan's Saga prefecture. The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine, which can burn LPG and conventional marine fuel. Mol expects use of LPG to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide emissions by 20pc and sulphur oxide and particulate matter emissions by 90pc compared with a heavy oil-dedicated vessel. The VLGC is also designed to be able to carry ammonia, eyeing potential demand growth for decarbonisation. Japanese shipping firms and shipbuilders have boosted construction of LPG carriers that can also ship ammonia, as demand for the cleaner fuel is expected to increase in future. Japan plans to co-fire ammonia at coal-fired power plants to reduce CO2 emissions, while aiming to use ammonia as a hydrogen carrier. Shipbuilders Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries each delivered a VLGC, which can carry LPG and liquefied ammonia. Mol, in partnership with shipbuilders Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding, completed risk assessments to design a mid-size ammonia-fuelled ammonia and LPG carrier , targeting to finish construction by 2026. US economic growth slows to 1.6pc in 1Q

Houston, 25 April (Argus) — The US economy in the first quarter grew at a 1.6pc annual pace, slower than expected, while a key measure of inflation accelerated. Growth in gross domestic product (GDP) slowed from a 3.4pc annual rate in the fourth quarter, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reported on Thursday. The first-quarter growth number, the first of three estimates for the period, compares with analyst forecasts of about a 2.5pc gain. Personal consumption slowed to a 2.5pc annual rate in the first quarter from a 3.3pc pace in the fourth quarter, partly reflecting lower spending on motor vehicles and gasoline and other energy goods. Gross private domestic investment rose by 3.2pc, with residential spending up 13.9pc after a 2.8pc expansion in the fourth quarter. Government spending growth slowed to 1.2pc from 4.6pc. Private inventories fell and imports rose, weighing on growth. The core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, which the Federal Reserve closely follows, rose by 3.7pc following 2pc annual growth in the fourth quarter, although consultancy Pantheon Macroeconomics said revisions to the data should pull the index lower in coming months. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to begin cutting its target lending rate in September following sharp increases in 2022 and early 2023 to fight inflation that surged to a high of 9.1pc in June 2022.
