<article><p class="lead">Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker Nucor will build two new galvanizing lines split between South Carolina and the western US.</p><p>One of the lines will be at Nucor's Berkeley flat-rolled steel mill in South Carolina and will have a capacity of 500,000 short tons (st)/yr and be able to produce galvanized steel up to 72 inches wide. </p><p>The $425mn investment will target the automotive and durable consumer good markets and will open in mid-2025. </p><p>In August, <a target="_blank" href="https://metals.argusmedia.com/newsandanalysis/article/2365995">Nucor announced</a> a $200mn modernization to the Berkeley mill that includes the construction of a new air separation unit. </p><p>The other galvanizing line will be built in the western US. Nucor did not release further details about the project. </p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://metals.argusmedia.com/newsandanalysis/article/2282770">In December</a>, the steelmaker purchased a majority stake in California Steel Industries, a 3.1mn st/yr rolling mill in the southern part of California. </p><p class="bylines">By Rye Druzin</p></article>
