EU to end Covid test requirement for China arrivals

The EU has agreed to phase out Covid-19 testing for people arriving from China.

The bloc's presidency said the requirement for a negative pre-departure test will be phased out by the end of February, and random testing on arrival will end by the middle of March.

The EU had recommended the measures in the early days of January after Beijing's rapid lifting of pandemic restrictions and mass testing led to a resurgence in infections. It said the reversal of these measures followed "recent epidemiological developments".

The European Centre for Disease Control Prevention and Control (ECDC) said this week that rates of cases, hospital admissions and deaths in the bloc have all declined to the lowest levels recorded in the past 12 months. But there have been no data from Beijing on daily infection rates or deaths since December, and only weekly data on hospital deaths since then.

The EU's move could provide a boost for jet fuel demand, which the IEA this week said will have a "central role" in overall oil consumption growth this year. It also said that China will "resume its established role as the primary engine of world oil demand growth" in 2023, albeit with the caveat that the country's reopening from years of strict lockdowns could be inconsistent.
