American Consolidated Natural Resources (ACNR) plans to lay off nearly all of the workforce at the Lila Canyon mine in Utah.

About 150 workers at the mine are expected to be laid off on 19 January, according to a notice posted by the Utah Department of Workforce Development. Lila Canyon underground mine, which is operated by ACNR subsidiary Emery County Coal Resources, employed an average 152 workers in the third quarter, US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data show.

Mining operations at Lila Canyon have been restricted since September 2022, when there was a fire at the section of the site that contained the mine's longwall mining equipment. ACNR had been working toward reaching that section of the property and was expected to assess the damaged area and provide a more detailed plan for recovery at that time. ACNR had originally planned to reach that point by the end of this month.

Some market participants said they have been told that the mine will be permanently closed.

Emery County Coal declined to comment, and ACNR and MSHA did not respond to requests for comment.

Lila Canyon's workforce shrank in the aftermath of the fire from an average 261 workers in the third quarter of 2022 to as low as 146 workers in the first three months of 2023, according to MSHA data.

The mine produced 150,099 short tons (136,168 metric tonnes) of coal in January-September 2023, down from 2.28mn st st in 2022 and 3.47mn st in 2021, according to MSHA. But no coal was delivered to US utility-scale generators in 2023, according US Energy Information Administration (EIA) fuel receipts data. In January-September 2022, Lila Canyon shipped 415,849st of coal domestically, EIA data show.

The company also exports some of Lila Canyon's coal.
