Argentina’s shale activity stays brisk in June

Hydraulic fracturing activity in Argentina's shale patch slipped but remained brisk in June, a month that saw an increase in local upstream mergers and acquisitions.

A total of 985 shale fracturing operations were carried out last month in the Vaca Muerta shale formation, a 9pc decline from the record of 1,079 set in May, according to data provided by Luciano Fucello, country manager of US services firm NCS Multistage.

The June level was the second highest on record for Vaca Muerta, just behind May, which absorbed a backlog of activity created by protests and roadblocks in April.

In June 2020, when restrictions associated with the Covid-19 pandemic were still stringent, a mere 196 shale fracturing operations were registered.

Argentina's state-controlled YPF led the June activity with 532 fracture stages carried out by Halliburton and Schlumberger.

Shell followed with 160 carried out by Halliburton; local firm Pluspetrol with 93 by Weatherford; France's Total with 68 by Schlumberger; Latin American independent Vista Oil & Gas with 65 by Schlumberger; Tecpetrol with 50 carried out by Tenaris, both of which are subsidiaries of Argentina's Techint Group; and Pan American Energy, a 50:50 joint venture between BP and Bridas, with 17 by Calfrac.

In the first six months of the year, there were 4,209 shale fracturing operations, more than three times the 1,403 carried out in January-June 2020.

YPF led the charge with 1,864 operations during the period, more than three times Shell's 499, which was the second-highest.

The increasing shale activity reflects not just a loosening of Covid-19 restrictions but also the effects of a natural gas subsidy program and higher international crude prices that is promoting exports.

M&A uptick

In last month's M&A activity, trader Trafigura partnered with Vista on a drilling project in Vaca Muerta, with part of the production earmarked for the former's local refinery.

Separately, Argentina's Compañia General de Combustibles (CGC), a subsidiary of domestic conglomerate Corporacion America, acquired the local assets of China's state-owned Sinopec, including stakes in blocks in the Golfo San Jorge and Cuyana basins.

In May, the latest month for which energy secretariat data is available, Argentina's gas production declined by 3pc, on the year, to 121.25mn m3/d. Crude output climbed by 13pc to 504,118 b/d.

Crude output was pushed higher by production in Neuquen, where most of Vaca Muerta is located, which registered an output of 189,199 b/d in May, a sharp 44pc increase from the same month last year, according to provincial figures.
