Boeing increases 2Q commercial deliveries

Aerospace manufacturer Boeing's commercial aircraft deliveries surged in the second quarter, demonstrating the company's march back from last year's operational constraints that weighed on production.

Boeing also resumed deliveries to China in June, handing over eight jets to carriers in the country, after the company was caught in the middle of Beijing and Washington's tariff tit-for-tat in April that disrupted trade flows.

Quarterly deliveries of Boeing's flagship narrowbody 737 MAX rose to 104 units from 70 in the second quarter last year. Shipments were little changed from the first quarter, signaling that the company was producing at a consistent level as it works toward reaching a build rate of 38 aircraft/month by the end of the year.

Boeing handed over 24 787 Dreamliners in the latest three-month period, up from nine a year earlier and 13 in the first quarter. The company in April said it aims to produce seven 787s a month, up from five currently, as it spends $1bn to expand its facility in South Carolina.

It remains unclear how many of those 787s were from new production rather than inventory, given that the company earlier this year shut down its "shadow factory" in Everett, Washington, where it completed rework on 20 Dreamliners that did not meet manufacturing specifications. Boeing has said previously it intends to deliver "about half of the remaining airplanes this year."

Boeing's main widebody program has come under scrutiny after the fatal crash of an Air India flight in Ahmedabad on 12 June. No action has been taken outside of India's aviation regulator mandating increased oversight into the rest of the airline's 787 fleet, which passed enhanced safety inspections.

The company's backlog stood at 6,590 aircraft as of 30 June, representing a workload well into the next decade. Boeing has booked 625 orders after cancellations and conversions through the first half of the year.

Boeing and other original equipment manufacturers globally have pushed for the US to drop a Section 232 investigation into imports of commercial aircraft and engines, which they say threatens to upend global trade and supply chains.
