ExxonMobil is terminating its joint ventures with Russian oil and gas giant Rosneft amid tightening sanctions against Russia.
The projects, set up in 2013 and 2014, included plans to explore and produce oil in the Russian arctic and the Black Sea. ExxonMobil expects to formally start the withdrawal from the projects this year and to record a $200mn after-tax loss.
The US and the European Union imposed sanctions relating to the Russian energy sector in 2014 in response to its annexation of Crimea. In the second half of 2017 the US further expanded sanctions against Russia, and more sanctions against Russian individuals are expected.
ExxonMobil said it complied with all applicable laws, rules and regulations during the time it was in the Rosneft joint ventures.
