Late-night negotiations between Canadian integrated steelmaker Stelco and its largest union failed to produce an agreement on a new contract yesterday.

The United Steelworkers (USW) Local 8782 union met with company executives, including chief executive Alan Kestenbaum, yesterday in a final effort to agree to a new contract. The union's prior contract expired on 30 June.

In an email this morning, USW Local 8782 president Randy Graham said that he is not sure if there will be further talks with the company.

The union's membership rejected the new contract on 28 July with 52pc voting against.

Graham said the union is ready to go on strike beginning at 12:01am on 22 August.

If the two sides cannot reconcile their differences, the 3.1mn short tons/yr mill would have to begin the work to shut down the blast furnace on Thursday, beginning the production stoppage at the mill, Graham had previously said.

Two other smaller USW unions at the mill have either approved their new contracts or are working to bring them for a vote to membership.

Stelco did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

It is unclear what a strike at Stelco could mean for other negotiations between other North American steelmakers and their USW membership. In the US integrated steelmakers Cleveland-Cliffs and US Steel are negotiating with USW leadership who represent more than 23,000 steelworkers over contracts that expire on 1 September.
