Japan's largest power producer by capacity Jera has completed remodeling a gas turbine of the 972MW Linden power plant in the US state of New Jersey, for co-firing hydrogen.
Jera, the largest investor in Linden power plant operator Linden Cogen Holdings with a 50pc share, will co-fire a maximum of 40pc hydrogen with natural gas at the No.6 gas-fired power unit at the Linden power complex. Hydrogen will be supplied from US independent refiner Phillips 66's 250,000 b/d Bayway refinery, which is located next to the power complex. Jera has secured a purchase agreement with Phillips 66 to procure by-product gas including methane, ethane, and hydrogen with natural gas ahead of the remodeling.
The utility operates five combined cycle gas turbine units and the No.6 simple cycle gas turbine generation unit at Linden, with a total capacity of 972MW.
Jera aims to collect technical data from actual operations of units that co-fire gas and hydrogen in areas where hydrogen can be procured easily, for future hydrogen co-firing operations in Japan and other countries.
