Adds company comment on refinery production plans.

The US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) is investigating Marathon Petroleum's Martinez, California, renewables plant after two fires last month.

Marathon reported a fire at the facility on 19 November that injured one worker and led 20 workers to evacuate the facility. The fire in a hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) unit led to a 590 bl release of renewable diesel (RD), according to a report from Marathon.

An earlier 11 November fire in the same unit, a converted hydrocracker, caused the release of approximately 5 bl of RD.

CSB investigators were on site today, the agency said in an email to Argus.

Marathon is conducting an internal investigation into the fire and cooperating with the ongoing CSB investigation, the company told Argus.

The company declined to comment on whether the November fires and CSB investigation have changed its previously-communicated plans to reach 48,000 b/d of production by year-end.

The Martinez facility has been undergoing a conversion from a traditional petroleum refinery to a renewable fuels plant since March 2021 and is slated to reach full production of mostly RD by the end of this year. That is when additional feedstock pretreatement units come online, according to Marathon's most recent earnings call.

The CSB is responsible for investigating industrial chemical accidents in the US, such as the deadly 2022 explosion at BP's Toledo refinery in Ohio.
