Thailand's base oil imports fell in 2023, as a weak economy pressured lubricant demand.

Thailand imported 329,600 kilolitres (290,180t) of base oils in 2023, down by 12pc from 2022, according to GTT data.

The Thai economy grew by only 1.8pc in 2023, down from 2.6pc the previous year, including contractions in the manufacturing sector and exports, according to the Thai government. Growth was lower than expected, as the central bank had earlier estimated annual growth between 2.5-3pc.

Thailand imported 32,100kl of base oils in December, up slightly by 1pc from November but 43pc higher than year-earlier volumes. The December imports were in line with the five-yearly average of 32,200kl/month. Year-earlier imports were lower, pressured by weakened industrial demand and ample supplies.

South Korea remained Thailand's biggest supplier, making up 53pc of total Thai imports in 2023. Supplies edged up by 3pc and 60pc from the previous month and last year respectively, to 18,500kl in December. South Korea predominantly exports premium grade base oils, while Thailand solely produces Group I grades.

Singaporean cargoes fell by 6pc on the month but rose by 16pc compared to 2022, to reach 9,300kl in December. Total volumes from the city state remained stable at 109,300kl in 2023, up by 14pc from the previous year.
