Japanese firms start truck-to-ship ammonia bunkering
A Japanese cross-industry group has started trial supplies of fuel ammonia to a tugboat from a tanker truck, ahead of an official commissioning scheduled for late August.
The group comprises shipping firm NYK Line and its subsidiary Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha, power producer Jera and ammonia producer Resonac. The companies have jointly studied the possible setting up ammonia bunkering for tugboats since December 2023.
Jera supplied the marine ammonia to NYK on 17 July to fuel the NYK-owned tugboat A-Tug at Yokohama port. The ammonia was transported by a tanker truck and fuelled by truck-to-ship operations, which the group said is the world's first attempt.
A-Tug is expected to begin normal operations in late August, behind an initial target of June because of technical delays. Jera after the commissioning will supply the marine ammonia to Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha, which will be in charge of operating the tugboat at Yokoyama and Kawasaki ports in Tokyo bay.
Jera is buying from Resonac an unspecified volume of low-carbon ammonia, which is partly derived from waste plastics. Ammonia consumption of the tugboat was undisclosed. But bunkering is scheduled to be done twice a month by an 8-10t tanker truck, Jera said.

London, 11 September (Argus) — Indian fertilizer importer Fact has issued a fresh tender to buy 30,000t of 15-15-15. The tender, which closes on 23 September, specifies delivery to New Mangalore port over 1-15 December. The fresh request comes despite Fact having been offered two 25,000t cargoes of 15-15-15 by a trading firm in a tender that closed last week. Houston, 10 September (Argus) — The port of New Orleans (Nola) in Louisiana and terminal operators there are limiting operations today in preparation for a full closure Wednesday as tropical storm Francine passes. Terminal operators are expected to reopen on 12 September after damages are assessed. United Bulk Terminals (UBT) issued a force majeure this morning from the Davant terminal on concerns for employee safety. The company did not disclose a timeline for reopening. UBT specializes in coal and petcoke along with other commodities. Associated Terminals will suspend operations 11-12 September and will assess damages on 13 September. The National Weather Service forecasts Francine to make landfall tomorrow on the Louisiana coast as a hurricane. Commodities including petcoke, coal, agriculture and fertilizer are likely to be affected by the port closure. London, 9 September (Argus) — Kenya's NCPB has issued a fresh tender, closing on 13 September, to buy around 245,000t of various fertilizers for the 2024-25 season under the country's fertilizer subsidy programme. NCPB initially sought lower quantities in a tender that was to close on 26 August , requesting 82,868t of various fertilizers. But the tender was suspended, citing an appeal from the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board. In its latest tender, NCPB said agreed contracts are renewable each season for a period of two years under the subsidy programme. The 13 September tender requests the following: 25,000t urea (500,000 x 50kg bags) 40,000t CAN 26 (800,000 x 50kg bags) 5,000t amsul (100,000 x 50kg bags) 15,000t 17-17-17 (300,000 x 50kg bags) 15,000t 25-5-5 (300,000 x 50kg bags) 35,000t 23-23-0 (700,000 x 50kg bags) 10,000t crop-specific NPK fertilizer for top dressing with a minimum nitrogen nutrient content of 26pc plus other micronutrients (200,000 x 50kg bags) 70,000t crop-specific NPK fertilizer for planting with a minimum nitrogen nutrient content of 17pc and above, a minimum phosphorus content of 29pc and above, plus other micronutrients (1,400,000 x 50kg bags) 30,000t crop-specific NPK fertilizer for planting with a minimum nitrogen nutrient content of 9-16.99pc, a minimum phosphorus content of 22-28.99pc and above, plus other micronutrients (600,000 x 50kg bags) The complex fertilizers requested are to be chemically compounded. Offers are to be made on a delivered-to-NCPB-depot basis. The tender document also states that a supplier will not be awarded for the supply of more than two fertilizer types.
