MET Group aims to become global energy company

Switzerland-based MET Group strives to become a global integrated energy company with a footprint across Europe, Asia and the US, its chief executive Benjamin Lakatos told Argus.

MET dreamed of entering the LNG market for 16-17 years but knew that it had to "grow up" first, its chief executive Benjamin Lakatos told Argus on the sidelines of the Gastech conference in Houston last week. The firm now has a sufficient size to take on fob contracts, Lakatos said — it signed its first long-term deal for US LNG on a fob basis in July. MET's revenue was nearly €25bn ($28bn) in 2023.

The firm has already been buying spot LNG for 4-5 years. It has long-term regasification capacity in Germany, Spain and Croatia, and unloaded LNG in eight countries last year.

MET is now setting its sights on the Asian market, where it is looking to start both gas sales and gas supply sourcing through its subsidiary in Singapore that opened last year. It is also looking for additional potential US LNG supply. "But we don't want to do it too fast," Lakatos said.

Lakatos did not exclude the possibility of getting involved in the upstream sector as well. Owning upstream assets and having fixed costs "is a kind of insurance against market de-efficiencies", Lakatos said — by which he means "too big" price differentials, for example between Europe and the US.

In the medium term, firms can only stay competitive in LNG if they are involved "in all three key regions — Asia, US sourcing, Europe", Lakatos said. "We need to play this optimisation between the three territories." A large part of the value in selling LNG will start to shift between continents, he said. But while this strategy is "easy to execute and understand" for the largest global companies, it is more challenging for smaller ones such as MET, Lakatos said.

Lakatos said that although he would like to see a convergence of global gas prices over time, the market's structure is too segmented to allow this. Today, only a few companies are involved in the whole US LNG value chain, from extracting the gas, to liquefying it, shipping it and then regasifying the supply and selling it to Europe. "Everyone has his own home currency or price reference, everyone is asking for relatively big risk securities."

MET's number one priority within Europe for the next five years is growing its sales in the retail sector, Lakatos said. The firm is starting to push higher retail sales in France. It will also restart in Germany and is targeting higher sales in Italy and Spain too. The MET head described his firm's trading style as "a little bit opportunistic", with traders taking advantage of changing price differentials.

MET is also interested in the Baltics because it believes that the region is undervalued by international investors owing to the geopolitical situation, Lakatos said. "Investors do not consider the very stabilising factors such as the EU and Nato membership of these countries, or the euro currency." One of the business areas MET will be looking at in the Baltics is fertilisers.

Expanding into fertilisers

MET is trying to expand its value chain into the European fertilisers sector, in view of declining European gas consumption, as it strives to stay competitive.

Lakatos said he is concerned that Europe will soon become heavily dependent on imports of fertiliser, just as it is on gas imports. Without support, the heavily gas-intensive European fertiliser industry will continue to struggle because of high gas prices, Lakatos said.

MET is working on a new product for fertiliser companies, in which it would have the option of supplying either ammonia or natural gas, as both can be used to run the plants. The firm has spoken to potential suppliers but it will take 1-2 years to build up its expertise, Lakatos said.

New York, 4 October (Argus) — Tightening vessel carbon intensity indicator (CII) scores and looming 2025 FuelEU marine regulation are expected to raise biodiesel demand for bunkering, but non-competitive US prices should continue to weigh down on US bio-bunker demand. Houston B30, a blend of used cooking methyl ester (Ucome) and very low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), in September averaged at $821/t, a $45/t premium to B30 sold in Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp, and a $55/t premium to B24 sold in the west Mediterranean hub of Gibraltar and Algeciras (see chart) . Houston B30 was also priced at $115/t and $61/t premium to B24 sold in Singapore and Guangzhou, China, respectively. The price premium would continue to incentivize ship owners with global, ocean-going fleets to pick Asia first for their biodiesel bunker purchases, followed by northwest Europe and western Mediterranean. US demand for biodiesel for bunkering would continue to stagnate unless the US passes a legislation allowing Renewable Identification Number (RIN) credit under the US Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program be used by ocean-going vessels fueling with biodiesel in US ports. The legislation could level US' price playing field. Two bipartisan bills were put forward in support of renewable fuel for ocean-going vessels, one in the US Senate this year and one in the US House of Representatives last year, but they are currently dead in the water. Conventional marine fuels are priced cheaper than biodiesel and green varieties of LNG, ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen. But tightening International Maritime Organization (IMO) and EU regulations are forcing the hand of ship operators to consider green fuels to avoid hefty penalties and having their vessels suspended from trading. Ship owners whose vessels are outfitted with LNG-burning engines, are poised to have the lowest marine fuel expense heading into 2025, as fossil LNG is currently ship owners' cheapest low-carbon fuel option. But retrofitting a vessel to burn LNG could range from $5-$35mn, depending on the size of the vessel. Biodiesel, a plug-and-play fuel that does not require a vessel retrofit, is the second cheapest low-carbon fuel option after fossil LNG. IMO's CII regulation came into force in January 2023 and requires vessels over 5,000 gt to report their carbon intensity, which is then scored from A to E. The scoring levels are lowered yearly by about 2pc, so even a vessel with no change in CII could drop from C to D in one year. If a vessel receives a D score three years in a row or E score in the previous year, the vessel owner must submit a corrective actions plan. E scoring vessels could be prohibited from entering some ports' territorial waters, but this penalty is yet to be imposed on any E vessels. In 2023, the IMO reported that 40pc of the vessels scored A or B, 27pc scored C, 19pc scored D or E and 14pc were unresponsive. The EU's FuelEU maritime regulation will require ship operators traveling in, out and within EU territorial waters to gradually reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity on a lifecycle basis, starting with a 2pc reduction in 2025, 6pc in 2030 and so on until getting to an 80pc drop, compared with 2020 base year levels. It imposes a penalty of €2,400/t ($2,629/t) of VLSFO equivalent energy for vessel fleets exceeding its GHG limits. US tops expectations with 254,000 jobs in Sep

Houston, 4 October (Argus) — The US added more jobs than expected in September and the unemployment rate ticked down, signs the labor market is strengthening heading into the US presidential election. US nonfarm payrolls rose by 254,000 workers last month, and the jobless rate fell to 4.1pc, the Labor Department reported Friday. Gains in August were revised up by 17,000 to 159,000 and those in July were revised up by 55,000 to 144,000. September's job gains were much higher than the 140,000 estimated by economists in a Trading Economics survey. Job gains blew past expectations in the same month the Federal Reserve began cutting interest rates for the first time since 2020, citing concerns that a weakening labor market might pull down the overall economy. Odds of a quarter point rate cut at the next Fed meeting in November rose to 91pc today from about 68pc Thursday, according to fed funds futures markets, while odds of a half-point cut fell to 9pc. The Fed last month penciled in 50 basis points of cuts in the remainder of this year. Job gains were higher than the average monthly gains of 203,000 over the prior 12 months, the Labor Department reported. Employment continued to move higher in food services and drinking establishments, health care, government, social assistance and construction. The labor market was little affected by Hurricane Francine, which made landfall in Louisiana on 11 September, during the reference periods for the surveys that contribute to the report. Gains in restaurants and drinking places rose by 69,000 jobs, much higher than the average 14,000 added over the prior 12 months. Health care added 45,000 jobs, below the monthly average of 57,000. Government added 31,000 compared with monthly averages of 45,000. Social assistance added 27,000. Construction added 25,000, near the monthly average. Manufacturing lost 7,000 jobs, most of them in the auto industry. The unemployment rate fell from 4.2pc in August, still higher than the five-decade low of 3.4pc posted in early 2023. Average hourly earnings rose by 4pc in the 12 months through September, up from 3.8pc through August. Indonesia’s Ni expansion via HPAL could face challenges

Singapore, 3 October (Argus) — Indonesia is expected to continue expanding its nickel production in the coming years, especially through increasing its high-pressure acid-leaching (HPAL) capacity, but the lack of readily available sulphuric acid and proper management of the tailings waste could pose challenges to this plan. Production is expected to rise despite an anticipated surplus in the supply of nickel in the market. Sulphuric acid is used in the HPAL process to separate nickel and cobalt from nickel ore to produce mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), which is the feedstock for the downstream processing of nickel sulphate, cathode and battery. Indonesia is expected to produce 325,000-345,000t of MHP this year, up from around 269,000t of in 2023, according to market sources. But with several MHP projects planned to come online in the next few years, MHP output for the next three years is projected to treble to 800,000-900,000t, according to the country's deputy minister for the co-ordinating ministry for maritime and investment affairs Septian Hario Seto on 2 October at a metal event in London. As this would require a lot more nickel ore and sulphuric acid, there are concerns that the availability of limonite ore could deplete as fast as the saprolite ore supply, which is mainly used for nickel pig iron and matte production. There were also discussions that the Indonesian government will convene with nickel market participants to discuss about the supply situation of limonite ore. There are currently four HPAL facilities operating in Indonesia. This includes Huayou's Huayue and Huafei projects , GEM's QMB project and Lygend's HPAL project. Others were also concerned that the availability of sulphuric acid could be a limiting factor to Indonesia's rapid expansion of HPAL production, as sulphuric acid demand from Indonesian HPAL projects is expected to reach 7.12mn t in 2025, almost 40pc increase from this year's demand at 5.17mn t, according to Argus estimates. Indonesia has been importing sulphuric acid from mainly China and South Korea to meet the growing demand for its production units at Obi Island and Sulawesi. But a ramp-up in sulphur-burning operations has pushed several MHP producers like Halmahera Persada Lygend to switch to buying lower-cost sulphur instead. For most sulphur burners, 1t of sulphur produces around 3t of sulphuric acid. The startup of Freeport McMoran's Manyar smelter in Java integrated industrial and port estate in East Java's Gresik, coupled with mining firm Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara's (AMNT) copper smelter in the West Sumbawa regency of Nusa Tenggara province, is also expected to alleviate some supply concerns, with the two expected to add at least 3mn t/yr of acid capacity by the end of 2025. Proper disposal of tailings waste could pose another challenge to Indonesia's planned HPAL expansion, particularly with increasing scrutiny on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards by Indonesia's mining industry. The HPAL process generates a large volume of tailings, with energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie estimating an output of 1.4-1.6t of waste from every 1t of nickel produced through HPAL. There are three common ways to dispose tailings waste – tailings dam, deep sea tailings and dry stacking. Dry stacking is more widely used because it is considered as the more sustainable option. But dry stacking also comes with its own environmental and biodiversity risks, as Indonesia's seasonal wet weather and seismic activity of the site could be a problem for waste storage. To ensure a smooth expansion in HPAL production, it is crucial for Indonesia to find ways to secure the necessary sulphuric acid supplies and to adopt appropriate methods for tailings waste disposal. Offers total 2.57mn t of urea in RCF tender: Update 2

Adds table of offers Amsterdam, 3 October (Argus) — Indian fertiliser importer RCF closed its tender to buy urea today, with 21 suppliers offering a total of 2.57mn t across both coasts. There were 20 offers for the east coast for a total of 1.37mn t and 17 for the west coast for 1.2mn t. Trading firms Agricommodities/ETG and Midgulf offered the largest quantities, submitting 150,000t each for both coasts ( see table below ). The quantities offered include the usual double- and triple-counting of volumes available to trading firms. There were 22 valid offers totalling 3.87mn t under the previous Indian tender on 29 August, which eventually saw just 1.13mn t bought. Most expectations before the tender's close had been for prices around the $370s/t cfr west coast and above, having risen higher over the week as tensions in the Middle East roiled the urea market. Prices offered will emerge in the coming days. RCF requested offer validity until 14 October and cargoes to ship from load ports by 20 November. Australia’s Origin to exit Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub

Sydney, 3 October (Argus) — Australian utility and upstream firm Origin Energy has decided not to proceed with its planned hydrogen development project, the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub (HVHH), in Australia's New South Wales. The decision to withdraw from the proposed 55MW HVHH and halt all hydrogen opportunities was made because of continuing uncertainty about the pace and timing of hydrogen market development, Origin said. The firm said the capital-intensive project, intended to progressively replace gas as a feedstock in a nearby ammonia manufacturing plant, carried substantial risks. Origin Energy had an initial agreement with Australian chemicals and explosives company Orica to take 80pc of the green hydrogen produced from the hub for Orica's 360,000 t/yr ammonia facility on Kooragang Island, near the city of Newcastle. Origin Energy and Orica in 2022 said they will study plans to develop the HHVH in Hunter Valley region of NSW, which is Australia's largest thermal coal-producing area. "It has become clear that the hydrogen market is developing more slowly than anticipated, and there remain risks and both input cost and technology advancements to overcome. The combination of these factors mean we are unable to see a current pathway to take a final investment decision on the project," said chief executive Frank Calabria on 3 October. Origin had planned to make a final investment decision on the project by late 2024. The hub, which was estimated to cost A$207.6mn ($143mn), had been allocated A$115mn in state and federal funding and was shortlisted for production credits under Canberra's Hydrogen Headstart programme. In July, Origin described the pace of development in the hydrogen industry as "slower than it had anticipated 12 months ago", said. The company expressed hopes that improved electrolysis efficiency would reduce the rising costs of production. The decision is a significant setback for Australia's green hydrogen ambitions, following the July decision by Australian miner and energy company Fortescue to postpone its target of 15mn t/yr green hydrogen output by 2030.
