UKCS gas reserves continue to fall

The UK's proven gas reserves across its continental shelf fell further in 2024, the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) said in its 2024 annual report.

The NSTA, UK offshore regulator, estimates proven gas reserves at 600mn bl of oil equivalent (boe) at the end of last year, down from 700mn boe at the end of 2023.

Total proven and provable oil and gas reserves were 2.9bn boe at the end of 2024 — of which approximately 70pc is oil and 30pc is gas — down from 3.3bn boe at the end of 2023.

And prospective oil and gas resources are up by 31pc from the end of 2023, on the back of new additions during the 33 licensing rounds.

Firms produced 401mn boe of oil and gas in 2024, of which 40pc or 160.4mn boe were gas, according to NSTA. The gas share of UK continental shelf (UKCS) production was 44pc in 2023, meaning the gas share is shrinking.

The NSTA expects the largest contribution to future gas production to come from gas condensate fields. Condensate fields require oil export infrastructure to send output to market. NSTA estimates that approximately 70pc of condensate gas reserves and resources are based in the central North Sea.
