Israel and Lebanon agree to ceasefire: Trump

Israel's military operations in Lebanon will cease at midnight Friday local time (5pm ET Thursday), President Donald Trump said on Thursday, citing conversations with the leaders of Israel and Lebanon.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese president Joseph Aoun "have agreed that in order to achieve PEACE between their Countries, they will formally begin a 10 Day CEASEFIRE", Trump posted on his social media platform.

The Lebanon-based, Iran-backed Hezbollah launched drone and missile attacks against Israel last month, opening a new front in the US-Israel war against Iran and drawing a heavy-handed response from Israel against civilian areas and infrastructure in Lebanon.

Aoun and Netanyahu agreed to meet face to face at the White House at an unspecified future date, Trump said.

Lebanon's civilian government and its military have no effective control over Hezbollah. Tehran has been insisting on a halt in Israel's attacks in Lebanon since the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire on 7 April.

The US-Iran talks on 11-12 April in Islamabad, Pakistan, failed to make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire or any other issues. But neither Tehran nor Washington have ruled out future diplomatic discussions. A ceasefire in effect between the US and Iran is scheduled to expire on 21 April.
