New tenders to buy and sell urea have been issued in Bangladesh and Indonesia respectively.

In Indonesia, producer Pupuk Kaltim will hold a tender on 12 December to sell 30,000t of granular urea for December shipment from Bontang. Traders believe that Kaltim could have additional urea to sell.

Bangladeshi agency BCIC has issued new tenders, closing on 20 November, to buy 25,000t each of prilled and granular urea.

Delivery is requested at Chittagong port for granular and Mongla port for prilled urea. Cargoes are to be delivered within 28 days of the opening of the letters of credit.

BCIC last held a tender to buy 25,000t each of granular and prilled urea on 7 November.

The lowest offers were by Hydrocarbon/Gentrade at $378.70/t cfrlo for granular urea and Agro Industrial/Wilson at $379.87/t cfrlo for prilled urea respectively.

Agriflex to supply phosphoric acid to Lithium Australia

Agriflex to supply phosphoric acid to Lithium Australia

Singapore, 16 April (Argus) — Australia-based phosphate rock producer Agriflex has agreed to supply high-quality phosphoric acid to Lithium Australia for its lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) or lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) production. The firms have signed a non-binding initial agreement, which envisages Lithium Australia building a demonstration plant with an estimated capacity of 250 t/yr of LFP or LFMP, potentially in Queensland. The plant will require around 200-300 t/yr of phosphoric acid, Agriflex's parent company Centrex said on 16 April. Lithium Australia will move on to build a commercial plant with an estimated capacity of around 25,000 t/yr of LFP or LMFP if the demonstration plant is successful and following pre-qualification of cathode powders. The commercial plant will need 20,000-25,000 t/yr of phosphoric acid. No timelines were provided, except that the initial agreement will run for a period of 24 months. Agriflex will conduct a study to produce high-quality phosphoric acid with low impurity content in Queensland for supply to Lithium Australia. The two firms are committed to building a battery supply chain domestically in Australia, to provide global battery producers an alternative supply source for LFP and LFMP. Tight supplies limit South Korea’s 1Q sulacid exports

Singapore, 16 April (Argus) — South Korea exported 583,400t of sulphuric acid during January-March, 5pc less than a year earlier, according to GTT data, because of production issues and a scheduled turnaround. Sporadic production issues at LS Metals and Materials' Onsan smelter from last year's final quarter reduced export availability from South Korea, pushing buyers to source cargoes from alternative origins like Japan or China. The producer also carried out a scheduled month-long maintenance in March, further cutting production. Spot fob South Korea/Japan prices hovered between $5-13/t fob during this year's first quarter. This provided some much needed stability to prices compared with a year earlier, as high inventories at producers pushed prices into negative territory to a low of -$9/t fob on 23 February 2023. Shipments to India and Thailand fell by 45pc and 21pc from a year earlier to 116,000t and 88,100t respectively, while exports to Saudi Arabia also fell by 78pc to 4,800t. Shipments to Chile more than trebled from the previous year to 161,200t, with the bulk of the cargoes booked to cover annual contracts. Deliveries to mainly high-pressure acid leaching projects in Indonesia rose by 51pc to 76,800t, to supplement operating rates before the start-up of several sulphur burners. South Korea's sulphuric acid shipments in March rose by 5pc from a year earlier to 192,700t, following a round of spot buying from Indonesia and a shutdown at a sulphur burner in Vietnam. Exports to Indonesia in March more than trebled against last year to 39,000t, following a round of spot buying from buyers like stainless steel producer Tsingshan. Exports to Vietnam also increased by 23pc to 9,200t, with cargoes replacing lost supplies because of the closure of a sulphur burner. Exports to India and Thailand slipped by 54pc and 63pc to 37,400t and 13,900t respectively. Japanese firms target ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier

Tokyo, 11 April (Argus) — A group of Japanese companies plan to work with Germany-based engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions in developing an ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier. Shipping firms Kwasaki Kisen Kaisha (Kline) and NS United Kaiun, trading house Itochu and vessel engineering firms Nihon Shipyard and Mitsui E&S signed an initial agreement on 10 April to develop a pilot 200,000dwt-class bulk carrier equipped with an ammonia-fuelled engine. The vessel will be used to collect data for building future commercial ships. Kline said it is unsure when the pilot vessel will be commissioned and when it will begin operating the ammonia-fuelled bulk carriers. The companies are also currently unsure how much ammonia will be needed for voyages. MAN Energy Solutions and Mitsui E&S will develop the ammonia-fuelled engine, Nihon Shipyard will build the vessel, while Itochu, Kline and NS United Kaiun will manage the ship to collect operating data. Itochu will also be in charge of sharing ammonia supply chain-related information. Japanese shipping firm NYK Line, engine developers IHI Power Systems and Japan Engine, Nihon Shipyard and Japanese classification society Class NK are also attempting to build an ammonia-fuelled ammonia carrier , targeting a commissioning in 2026. Argentina to remove import duties on urea, UAN: Caputo

Amsterdam, 10 April (Argus) — Argentina's economic minister Luis Caputo is proposing to eliminate import tariffs of 5.4pc and 3.6pc on nitrogen-based fertilizers urea and UAN. Caputo reported the planned move on X, formally known as Twitter, without specifying a timeline. Argentina is the third-largest urea import market in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico, receiving 825,000t last year, and as much as 1.55mn t in 2021, trade data show. Egyptian product accounted for 44pc of imports, or 364,000t, in 2023. Argentina has a commercial agreement with Egypt which exempts the import duty. Meanwhile, Nigerian producers supplied almost a fifth at 156,000t, while imports of Algerian urea were 125,000t last year. The country has one major urea producer, Profertil, which is jointly owned by north America's Nutrien and Argentinian state-owned energy company YPF, and has an annual granular urea capacity of 1.32mn t. UAN receipts were around 350,000 last year, down from just over 680,000t in 2020. Imports are typically sourced from the US, Trinidad and Tobago and Russia.
