How Argus assesses natural gas markets

  • Volume-weighted index method

Each index is a volume-weighted average, calculated from trade price and volume data submitted voluntarily by market participants. Editors review trade data to ensure it aligns with the methodology.
  • Bid week index methodology

Bid week indexes are calculated from fixed and basis trades conducted during the final trading week before the start of the contract month.
  • Assessment of illiquid markets

Where no trades are reported, Argus publishes a price assessment, clearly identified as distinct from a volume-weighted index.
  • Annual compliance audit

Argus natural gas indexes are audited annually by a compliance officer. The methodology has been approved by FERC.
