Argus alternative marine fuels

Marine fuels sale and consumption are not currently subject to greenhouse gas (GHG) restrictions or fees. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is requiring that vessels reduce their CO2 emissions (a type of GHG) by 40pc by 2030 and by 70pc by 2050 from 2008 base levels.

Separately, the EU has two proposals in the works which would apply to vessels calling EU ports:

1: To phase in maritime emissions trading in its emissions trading scheme starting in 2023, with 100pc auctioning of emissions from 2026.
2: For vessels to reduce their GHG intensity starting from 2025 with 75pc reduction by 2050, from 2020 base levels.

The IMO and EU’s objectives have prompted ship owners to invest in alternative marine fuels, such as ammonia, hydrogen, biofuel, LNG, and methanol among others.

Argus’ price assessments allow you to compare alternative to conventional bunkers. Our analysis pieces provide you with insight into alternative fuels trends.
